Lorraine
Roy

Ontari0, Canada

After spending an idyllic childhood on a farm in rural Southern Ontario, Lorraine Roy completed an Honours B.Sc. in Horticultural Science before opting for a professional career in art textiles. Taught to sew from the age of six, her artistic spirit was kindled when introduced to hand-embroidery. After a long period of experimentation, she eventually devised a suite of sewing machine techniques that allow her to ‘paint’ with fabric.

Her current work explores connections between art, science and nature. Not surprisingly, most of her imagery is inspired by the biology, mythology and cultural impact of trees: classic symbols of our connection with the natural world. She continues to accumulate new knowledge and insights about them, in order to better address and convey our mutual rich and complex kinship.

Retired from teaching textile art classes, Lorraine is now in demand for public speaking engagements while also working on her evolving themes in art textiles and private commissions. She is the happy recipient of many public grants, and her work is featured in collections worldwide.
